5 minute read

By Alex Mcauley on

When it comes to job searching these days, social media has become a ubiquitous tool. Candidates, employers, and even job seekers themselves are turning to social media to find people with shared interests, scope out available opportunities, and explore different career paths. Social media can be a valuable tool when you're looking for a new job. However, you need to take care how you use it to maximise your chances of finding a job. As such, here are some simple tips you can follow to ensure your job postings look good on social media.

Meta tags

When it comes to marketing your business on social media, you know that you need to be strategic and focus on making your posts visible to your target audience. The right content, the right timing, and the right audience all play an important role in social media optimization. However, a lot of small businesses tend to overlook meta tags. Even the most successful social media marketers sometimes forget about the value of meta tags. But when you understand their importance, you'll see how they can be the key to achieving your goals on social media.

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are a way to improve search engine ranking and accessibility of your content on social media platforms. Meta tags are snippets of invisible text that appear at the beginning of every web page. When someone does a search on Google, Yahoo, Bing, or any other search engine, the first thing that pops up is the content from the home page of the website that you've linked to. Therefore, meta tags are very important because they are the first thing that the user sees when they do a search.

Meta tags are also a way to inform social media platforms how you want them to display and categorise your posts. There are many different types of tags that you can use, but they all serve an important purpose. You can optimise your posts by categorizing them as static images, videos, or text. Depending on the social media platform, you can choose to optimise your posts for a specific audience, a certain search engine, a specific app, or a specific way that your fans will be able to see your content.

What Does Meta Tag Optimisation Mean?

Like any other online content, you posts on social media must be visible to the public. If your posts aren't visible to the public, then no one will be able to see them and your social media marketing will be a complete waste of time. The process of optimizing your posts is to make them visible to the public. There are multiple ways to do this, but the most important one is by optimizing your meta tags.

What Can You Do With Meta Tags in SMO?

With the value of meta tags, you might be wondering what you can do with them in social media optimisation strategies. Meta tags can be used for many different goals depending on the social media platform that you're optimizing for. You can choose to optimise your posts for a specific audience, a certain search engine, a specific app, or a specific way that your fans will be able to see your content.

What meta tags should I use on my job posting?

There are many options to choose from which can be quite exhausting so we're boiled down the list to the ones that will make your job posting stand out the most onm social media

Opengraph genereric

og:url, og:title, og:type, og:locale, og:image, og:description

  • og:url - This is the full URL of your job post
  • og:title - This should be set to the job title
  • og:type - This should be set to Website
  • og:locale - This should be set to the locale of your website. For UK websites this would be en_GB
  • og:image - This should be set to the full URL of your social media image (more on that below)
  • og:descrition - This should be set to a short snippet of your job description, one or two catching sentences

og:image - Your image should be optimised and correctly sized. The current recommendations for this are 1200x630 pixels, however, this does sometimes change so it's worth keeping an eye on this via the various social media sites help pages (LinkedIn, Facebook) etc.

If you're a Nodex customer the opengraph image sizing and meta tags are all taken care of for you right inside your CMS control panel. If you are using our Fabricruitment platform we automatically optimise your social media tags for each of your live jobs based on best practices and industry standards.

Twitter specific

twitter:card, twitter:site, twitter:title, twitter:description

  • twitter:card - This should be set to summary
  • twitter:site - This is the full URL of your job post
  • twitter:title - This should be set to the job title
  • twitter:descrition - This should be set to a short snippet of your job description, one or two catching sentences

Conclusion

The most important part of social media marketing is that you're putting your content out there for people to see. Good content is what will get you noticed and keep people coming back for more.

If you want to grow your social media following, you need to make sure that your posts are seen by your target audience. You can do this by creating great content that is optimised for social media platforms.

The most effective way to do this is to use meta tags. Meta tags are invisible text that appear at the beginning of every web page. They allow you to inform search engines, social media platforms, and apps how you want them to display, categorise, and index your content.
